How was thulium discovered?

Swedish chemist Per Teodor Cleve discovered thulium in 1879 from an analysis of the mineral erbia, a source of several rare earth elements. Because of its rarity and expense, there are not many uses for thulium and its compounds. The new oxide was named by Cleve as thulia.
